Gateway’s Consumer Credit Counseling Service

—Doug Horst, Program Director, Gateway’s Consumer Credit Counseling Service

How exciting it is to see a light bulb come on in a person’s mind! It could be something as simple as “if I stop doing ‘this’ weekly and only do it monthly, I will spend $30.00 less per month.” Or it could be as complicated as comparison shopping for a vehicle or even a house. But no matter the light bulb, the highlight in both the group and one-to-one settings sponsored by The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham is watching these light bulbs come on—and keep shining. For the past grant cycle, a couple of specific light bulbs come to mind..

1. In one of the group settings, all of the women lived in the same retirement home, and most/all were quite low income. They had the brilliant idea to share some subscriptions (newspaper and magazines) that several of them were each paying for. One person would order it. They would all contribute a couple of dollars and then share. Not only did this cause them to spend a few less dollars each month, but it also promoted camaraderie and community amongst the women.

2. One of the individuals we met with as part of this grant was spending about 50% of her net income on housing—a much too high percentage, in our opinion. With some individual coaching and hard work on her part, she has improved her credit and is being strongly considered for a new job—which, if obtained, will greatly improve the percentage of income that has to be paid for housing.
